01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

A delivery carrier opens to reveal a generously sized hot dog served in a bathtub. Sd Coffee is a characterful cafe that nods to the building’s former life as a neighbourhood electrical shop, while filling the space with Showa-era nostalgia and public-bathhouse motifs. Just looking at the old signs and curios around the room brings a welcome sense of escape from the everyday.

Loaded hot dogs with plenty of playful twists

The hot dogs are among the cafe’s signature dishes, with generous toppings spilling out of soft white bread. The “Avocado Tartar Dog” pairs a snappy, juicy frankfurter with avocado and house-made tartar sauce. The “Super Extra Cheese Dog” is covered in stretchy cheese, while the “Downtown Dog” brings together mochi and sauce mayonnaise in an unexpectedly harmonious combination. The names and combinations are designed to spark curiosity. Each comes with potato and egg: fluffy mashed potato topped with a soft-boiled egg.

Milk-bottle shakes and carefully brewed coffee

Shakes served in masu cups or milk bottles bring another playful touch. Options include a matcha shake with a pronounced milky flavour and one featuring the texture of pleasantly bitter coffee jelly; the combinations move between sweet and savoury notes. The cafe also serves coffee brewed by the drip method, including the “Adachi Ward Blend” from Suzuki Roastery, as well as iced coffee presented in a light-bulb-shaped vessel.

Order and pay in advance at the counter, and look out for the shop’s corner selling vintage goods. Stop by during a walk around Kita-Senju for a relaxed break and an entertaining dish with the easygoing feel of unwinding after a bath.
